Statement of Work

Identity, at its most basic, is about belonging. What you have in common with some people and what differentiates you from others. This need to belong has become harder to fulfill. What with mixed cultural and ethnic backgrounds and migration to one or more countries during a life time, the very question of where we 'come from' has become difficult, if not impossible for some, to answer.

My earlier work dealt with issues of not belonging, not fitting in, and other such situations experienced by second and third generational migrants. The fear of losing ones cultural identity facinated me. An attempt, by some, to live within the boundaries of tradition, segregating themselves from the influences of the other.

My recent work is more an exploration of how overlapping cultures influence and grow from each other. I draw from the threads of my past and present experiences, my own attempts to find a sense of personal location.

The works themselves are a fitting together of these fragments. Each amalgamation creating new situations that suggest a constant state of transition. Movement rather than fixity.

Some of the works are futile attempts to cover up mistakes, to rub out the past and start afresh. Impossible challenges that leaves traces of the old, which in turn creates something new and unique.

Others are rude interruptions in an ordered yet false environment. A touch of chaos in an unreachable eutopia.
